This is a lecture given by Leo Strauss on the topic “Why We Remain Jews” on February 4, 1962, which was part of a series at the Hillel Foundation at the University of Chicago. This lecture and the discussion period following were published in two collections of Leo Strauss: “Leo Strauss: Political Philosopher and Jewish Thinker,” ed. Kenneth L. Deutsch and Walter Nicgorski (Lanham–London, Rowman and Littlefield, 1994); and “Jewish Philosophy and the Crisis of Modernity: Essays and Lectures in Modern Jewish Thought,” ed. Kenneth Hart Green (Albany, New York: SUNY Press, 1997).
