Werner Dannhauser

Werner Dannhauser (1929-2014) came to the University of Chicago in 1954 as a student in the Committee on Social Thought in order to study with Strauss, whom he had heard lecture at the New School in New York. Dannhauser worked as an editor and writer at Commentary magazine before he became professor of government at Cornell University. He retired in 1992, and in his retirement he taught at Michigan State University. Dannhauser is author of Nietzsche’s View of Socrates (Cornell University Press, 1974) and translator of works by Gershom Scholem.
